Potential applications of GPT

I’ve been playing around with GPT for various use cases. Here are some low-hanging ones I haven’t heard people mention:

  1. Translation from international news to English

Google Translate has been getting better and better over the years, but it’s still been quite painful to read articles that were translated from Chinese with the default Chrome translator.

I tried putting the chinese text in ChatGPT and bam, this is basically perfect. Certainly very readable. Every news organization should now have access to automatic international coverage. All content should basically be consumable in every language.

  1. Extracting structured information from unstructured text

While I’ve seen a number of tools that are using GPT to generate unstructured text, I actually think there’s even more utility in using GPT to grab structure from unstructured text. For example, at my agency (and probably many other agencies around the world), a great deal of operational work involves simply taking information from email conversations and inputting them in structured ways into a spreadsheet or web app. This is quite tedious to do, and is prone to errors/missing data, etc. But ChatGPT is pretty good at this! For example:

  1. Rewriting transcripts in polished content

One of my hypotheses is that AI will make it much easier for people to do a verbal brain dump on any topic, and then have those words turned into relatively polished content automatically. This is something we do a lot at Frindle — we’ll interview a subject matter expert for a half hour, and then turn the transcript of that interview into a blog post.

AI makes this much easier at scale!

  1. Writing/correcting English so that it’s completely idiomatic

As remote work becomes increasingly global, it’ll be more and more common to be working with colleagues in Eastern Europe, South America, or Asia, for whom English is not their first language. Right now, the best in class solution for checking their written English (whether Slack messages or something longer) is Grammarly. But Grammarly only checks for grammar - ChatGPT can just rewrite everything in idiomatic American English.
